do they love us, hate us or want to be us?

everyone wants to be black but nobody wants to be black
what a juxtaposition
have you ever heard something so contradictory that it makes perfect sense
everyone wants to be black but nobody wants to be black
she said so calmly
before giving me the sight to look through her lens

flying into a culture without paying baggage fee
self diagnosing themselves colourblind when colour is all they make us see
ignoring the scars on our backs now that we are free
tagging along for the fun but in brutality chose to flee

look at our skin like a bags of dirt
yet they tan by the sea
intensifying a melanin they have but cannot see

so many ignored intellectuals
but they honour our athletes
wont give a coloured light of day
unless its a musician they'd die to meet

constitutions filled with equal rights
and civil liberties
created by them not us
to follow but never lead

we are headed in the same direction
until the train arrives and they stay behind
and they want to help but they cannot let
their superiority go

they cannot let go
their freedom of speech
they cannot let go
their shameful pride
they cannot let go
the chains they hide

in the system and society
ensuring nothing worthy is in our reach
taking credit for everything that is ours
embracing what we have to offer
but not who we actually are

everyone wants to be black but nobody wants to be black
the sad reality
we give them so much of us but accepting they cannot be
everyone wants to be black but nobody wants to be black
and i agree
the beauty in colour is something even I wouldn't always choose for me
